Evaluation:

What problem did you identify?
That Health and safety in skateboarding is alway pushed aside as it is seen as being uncool, this is something that needs to change, as in some countries skateboarding was banned due to the amount of injuries sustained within the sport. The younger generation look upto the professionals who "never wear helmets." the statistics show the danger within skateboarding.

What evidence did you find to support your decisions?
We found a lot of evidence on skateboarding injury and health and safety within skateboarding
as show in my design context....

What methods did you use to gather your evidence and what forms did it take?
I have gathered a lot of qualitative primary research throughout this project for example the group questionnaire was handed out to a range of people younger generation to older skaters that have been skating for years, I personally went on to publish the questionnaire on the "Sidewalk Magazine" Forum this is the biggest uk skateboarding magazine and is followed by the majority of skaters in the uk. this to me was the best way of getting a range of feedback making the questionnaire more effective. I personally went to the Works skate park the biggest skatepark in leeds to make observations (and skate) on how many people actually wore protective wear i found that not may people wear protection when street skating but the percentage is much higher with ramp skating. Another method of research i Personally carried out was interviews, I felt that this would give me more of an insight into injuries sustained in skateboarding on what happened and how to possibly how to avoid this, being a skateboarder myself i found this quite easy as i could simply speak to the local skaters back home.

(categorise your research using terms primary, secondary, quantitative and qualitative)

What methods of research did you find useful and why?
The interviews really paid off in giving me the data to create tips that would be effective to the audience, i feel that by speaking to skaters i found out what would actually appeal to then basically making it by  skaters for skaters.

How did these inform your response to your problem?
From our research we found statistics on injury within skateboarding this then gave us the data to work with to produce our info graphs.

What methods did you encounter as problematic?
We struggled to decide the target audience as from being a skater myself i know that the older generation of skaters would never be convinced to wear padding unless they where skating something above 12ft, So we decided to aim the design at younger skaters, beginners or people looking to start skateboarding, This choice of audience changed the style of imagery massively to appeal to the younger generation but still to communicate a message to the viewer i decided that the pictogram style was simple enough but would also appeal to the youngsters.

How did you overcome this?
I looked at the most popular names in skateboarding and where people are shopping, i looked at the style of design these shops/sponsors use and took inspiration from them and decided to incorporate the style into my digital design ideas.

What research could you have carried out that would have proved more useful?

You should reflect on your  individual contributions to group work and evaluate your own experience, opinions and decisions. Once you have completed your self evaluation:

Design Practice:
I began by coming up with some design ideas after looking at instruction graphics, i designed an initial idea of how a skateboard truck would go together this gave the basic idea on instruction graphics i feel that to create an effective one the perspective and positioning has to be right giving the design a feeling of depth.

From there after our target audience changed i decided to look at a style of design that would appeal to the younger generation. I started to design pictograms of the equipment i feel my designs are highly effective in putting across the message to the viewer i began to create a visual list.

Design sheets: In my group i decided to design the board setup graph and the one pushing the use of a helmet, i decided that the use of a skull would go along with the theme of anatomy and would work well in that context, Backing this decision up the use of a skull represents a feeling of death this could also be used as a scare tactic on the audience, I also feel that the use of a skull instead of a human head gives the design a personal feel because maybe the skull could be theirs.

Info graphs: visual display of data, From my research into the book Data Flow I found that when designing for a younger audience it is a good idea to minimise the amount of typographic elements as type can sometimes force the viewer away so i decided to carry on down the route of info graphics and the visual display of data.

Format: The poster design is to be 3metres long this would then be situated around eye level next to the skatepark, the reason for the design's landscape format is to allow the viewer to maybe skate past the design but by the time they are halfway past it it has grasped their attention and they are drawn to have a closer look the poster would be printed onto a water proof canvas to resist any weathering.

Colour schemes: I put together some layout  design ideas using the colour schemes that sam found this was  the first time i have ever done this seeing the same design but in different colour scheme's was very helpful in allowing me to see which would be more appropriate for our final.

Proverbally Yours- Message and Delivery: Pogress crit

Final Crit feedback:

Format:
The format of the design as a whole works well, the layout and image are portrayed in a clear and effective way - Finished to a high standard.

Message/communication:
The inside of the design and information communicates very well, however the outside of the design doesn't really fit the farming feel - if images where applied the communication would be so much more effective.

Appropriate audience:
Yes the information is aimed directly at farmers however we do not know who created the publication.
The final outcome and visuals work well as the use of yellow possibly represents corn? pigtograph inside represents a further feel of farming.

Relation to posters:
Great use of two colours really strong contrast between the yellow and black bright yellow is high impact and attracts your attention simple sans serif typeface high readability links well with the poster however same pantone yellow on poster would have been nice.

Research:
Good strong research develops a close link for the idea and previous brief you can clearly see a close relationship between the two through development and idea evolution and overall the piece works really well and met the criteria of the brief.

Issues raised during the crit:
- Communication of the image (Crop = Money)
seemed to be unclear.
- Colour scheme worked well in portraying the theme of the
design.
- Image of the coin was not put across well to the audience round gold circle was to simple
- Innovative folding method
- link in well with my initial poster design.

Action to be taken:
- Develop my image of a coin to increase visual message
- Test folding with stock that is going to be used
- Develop some more layout design ideas.

Priority:
- Folding test
- Develop overall layout Crit
- Imagery

Crit on friday:
- Do the designs work as a series?
- Is the message put across effectively?
- Is there any meaning behind the choice of font?
- Is there any meaning behind the colour choice?
- Is the purpose clear?
- Has the research carried out had any effect on the design?

Proverbally Yours- Message and Delivery: Pogress crit

Progress Crit:
Issues raised: Overall my crit went very well, everyone seemed to get the idea of what I aimed to achieve. The only problem was the visual message for the image was confusing -

Action to be taken:
I aim to produce a wider range of layout designs, so i can find a design that will work for the layout of the typographic elements of my design.
- Also i aim to develop my image in illustrator making the message communicate more effectively.

Study Task 3 - Research on Packaging desgn:

These  packaging designs where found on
www.lovelypackage.com

The package design above shows great layout, as you can see the large amount of text on the back of the package is laid out in a way that maximises readability and legibility by making sure no two letterforms come close to each other. This is achieved by good layout and a good choice of typeface. The only thing that I have picked up on that could be changed is the size of the typeface I believe readability and legibility could be further increased by a slight increase in type size.

In my opinion this design is so effective due to its simplicity, along with good choice of colour scheme. The colours used have a psychological effect on the viewer I have no idea if this was intended but the use of the colour green gives the design a natural feel, this goes well with the purpose of the package.

This packaging design was created for a range of chocolates, as you can see they have been beautifully designed, thought has been put into target market from my point of view this is obvious to me by the choice of colours. Both blue and pink have been used although highly stereotypical this still appeals to male and female. Innovative opening of the packaging gives the design a real professional feel.

This was my favourite of these packaging designs due to the simplicity of the design. Simplicity is what is needed for the product a first aid package needs to be to the point and in no way confusing. I believe this has been executed to a professional standard, the design has an overall clean finish along with the colour green - could symbolise health in this case.
I believe the clean feel is given off by the use of a large amount of white space. I will keep this in mind when creating designs in the future.

Study Task 2 - 5 examples of Graphic Design produced at different scales:

Thsi design is produced around the size of a business card this enables the piece to be taken everywhere as the piece can easilly be trasported in a wallet for example or bag.

Poket size boolet are highly effective as you can see it is common for a not book or pad to be created around 15 size so that the product is easily trasported and will fit in the buyers pocket.

Poster designs are normally around a3 size this seems to be the most common poster size as it is large enough to grasp the viewers attention but is also cost effective as poster designs are normally mass produced and placed allover.

Double page spread booklets

Communicating to a mass audience
Billboards

In this section I have shown a range of designs at different scales, The scale of a design is the dimensions of the piece it is not however the size of the design that makes it effective this all depends on the designs purpose, what it is created for.

Study Task 2 - 5 examples of Graphic Design using different media:

This typographic design has been created through a digital media i feel that the letterforms will have initially been drawn out in a traditional method. and then will have been digitalised in illustrator.

This design has been created through the media of screen print, as you can tell by the sketchy effect i feel that this is highly effective design outcome as it gives the design a real personality and in my opinion makes the design feel much more personal as it is handmade.

The image above shows a design from a well known british skateboard company, the design is created through the media of lino print, this is a technique where the a design is cut into a piece of lino, ink is then applied to the face of the print and placed face first onto the paper. Once pressed the ink is then transferred onto the paper

This is an innovative media, this typographic design by mario hugo consists of the typographic elements been outlined initially on the canvas and then filled using the media of string this gives the design a three dimensional element.

I have selected a range of graphic design's in different medias, for example there are digital designs and also traditional prints such as letterpress and lino printing.

Study Task 2 - 5 examples of Graphic Design delivering different messages:

Make art not war: this piece of design is created to communicate the message of the promotion of peace saying make art not war. I feel that the reason for this being so effective is how the piece is designed in the style of war propaganda designs

This is another design from the Aides group, this is communicating the message of the dangers of unprotected sex. The design is so effective due to how the woman's partner is replaced by a spider this shows that although her partner is not really a spider, he or she is still a danger to her.

This poster is a piece of world war two propaganda that is communicating a message of strength, its purpose was to recruit women to help in the factories helping to mass produce supplies for the troops.
it shows the image of a woman rolling up her sleeves that is an instant message of hard work and the flexing arm is a instant communication of power, combined with the typographic elements at the top "we can do it" this makes the design personal and aimed at all the women out there.

This image was created by shepard fairy to raise the awareness of what fossil fuels are doing to the environment he conveys this by the exaggeration of key elements making something that is not really visible in everyday life stand out as a very powerful piece of design. This poster communicates a message that green energy is the way forward.

This is a piece of russian constructivist propaganda it was created by a famous constructivist called Alexander Rodchenko i feel that this poster conveys the main message of power. I feel this is directly aimed at the general public so there for power to these people the reason i make this dicision is down  to the fact the figure is dressed in work clothes and the feeling of power is conveyed by the facial expressions the figure has and the arms in the air almost celebrating.

Graphic design is made for a purpose this is to communicate a message to the viewer using text and image, some of the messages above: keep moral high, unprotected sex is a danger, Make art not war.
all of these messages can be communicated through image type or colour.

Study Task 2 - 5 examples of Graphic Design performing different functions:

Design can be used to put messages across to the viewer in a very effective way for example this campaign raising the awareness of aids and unprotected sex, the message is put across by the males partner representing a scorpion a deadly black scorpion that represents danger. his partner is not a scorpion however is a danger to him the scorpion is a representation of this. This designs function is to inform and raise awareness of the issue.
see more:http://www.aides.org/

Information graphics, this is my second example of graphic design carrying out different functions, This shows graphic design as information graphics. information graphics are the display of information visually. This just makes the information much more interactive with the viewer and much more interesting to take in. Its function is to communicate the information in a visual much more interactive way.
see more: www.informationisbeautiful.net/

This is a poster that was part of a range called "SENTENCED TO DEATH'
The sentenced to death poster's function is to shock the viewer, the designer has done this by combing the image with the text, the image shows a prisoner who is on death row and who has committed crimes that have been so bad his life will be taken from him. this is an area you must be careful with as it can offend the viewer. However although this can get you in trouble i feel that it is a great way of making your design stand out of the crowd and get noticed. This designs main function is to shock!

This design shows how a campaign can use sex as a means to get attention, the campaign is to convince people to stop buying fur products to save the animals. it use sex as it instantly grabs the viewers attention.
see more:http://www.peta.org.uk/default.asp

I have shown a range of designs that have different functions for example the first poster was created to inform people the dangers of having unprotected sex, moving on from there Info graphics are created to inform the viewer on a subject. The sentenced to death poster has a function to shock the viewer, this is an area you must be careful with as it can offend the viewer. The two designs below this are designed to convince but use different tactics for one sex is the theme the other puts you on the spot.

Study Task 2 - 5 examples of Graphic Design in different contexts:

Street art:
Graphic design is all around us it appears everywhere the image above shows how graphic design is now a huge emergence within the street art culture. I love combination of image and typographic elements also combined with a re curing colour scheme i feel this is what makes the designs so effective.

Packaging design
This is graphic design in the form of packaging, i feel that this is where we see graphic design most frequently in everyday life where in most cases it is really bad. However this packaging company really embraces innovative ideas and in my opinion great interactive packaging ideas.

Web design
Graphic design in the form of web design, Graphic design can also always be in a digital context this is shown within web design for websites, this is a web design for a specialist paper company based in Hull. I feel that the web site is easy navigational due to the simple layout.
