End of Module Self Evaluation
What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I have developed a huge range of skills throughout the 402 module that has run throughout the year i feel that the workshops we have had developed my idea generation skills and have taught me that it is much more effective to carry on generating ideas even if i come up with a concept that i feel is effective early on. i have found i can produce a much more effective concept if i carry on this generation process and combine aspects of ideas to create a strong concept. Another key skill i have developed is my time management skills and organisation i started to create a to do list before the we had the set time management workshops however it was a huge eye opener for me when looking at how much procrastination effects our time when we should be working, This was something that i reacted to straight away making sure i am much more organised and control my work load. This has allowed me to produce a much higher standard of work and has allowed me to develop my designs much further and produce a much more aesthetic outcome.
What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
During this module i have experimented with designs in different formats, for example during the speaking from experience brief i have created a range of products and have made the lot run and work as a set, I feel i have achieved this down to the style of design i have used which was heavily inspired by post modernist design which is something i have warmed too from my context of practice module. I have also experimented with design in different formats i feel this is shown through my speaking from experience module where i have created a range of products all at different scales this has allowed me to experiment with innovative outcomes such as using perforation to spilt a design up as shown in my manifesto. I feel that by working at different scales i have experimented with different outcomes by creating a range of products for the speaking from experience package i feel this has prepared me for the second year of the programme as ive experimented with a wide range of outcome.
What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I feel that my main strength is with the layout of my designs i feel that from looking at existing publications and editorials i have realised what works well and what doesn't, i feel that this has informed me on how to create a highly effective design that is easily readable and legible with a strong hierarchy. I also feel that i am now able to create designs that combine both postmodern and modernist attitudes on design i feel this creates a much larger variety of outcome that i am able to produce i feel this is very effective for me as it means i can choose a style that will fit the brief given to me. I feel this is something that will help me progress during the second year.
What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
I feel that the only weaknesses that i have shown throughout this module have been down to blogging i must keep up to date with my blogging. Although i have improved on this element i feel there is still room for improvement. I feel that iidid not capitalise on this i should have blogged designs that i felt where effective and even designs i felt did not work well. By analysing these i will just increase my understanding on what graphic design is and what succeeds and what fails.
5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
Time Management- I have decided that i will try to improve my how i manage my workload to become a much more less stressed effective designer, I feel that i will apply this mainly to design development i have already planned this and on returning to the college i aim to print out design layout sheets saving me time when it comes to drawing out designs layouts
Workshops- I must make sure that i make the most of the what is on offer to me for example the screen and print rooms have been there all year on offer to me and i have not capitalised on this. this is again due to time management and not allowing myself to organise this.
Digital print room - I must make sure that i book slots as early as possible i have found myself dropping in in a morning a ridiculous amount of times if i had simply been organised and gone and booked a slot i could have easily avoided this problem.
PPP Blog - I feel that i need to start blogging inspirational work and analysing what i feel works i feel this will increase my understanding of not only what graphic design is but also what works effectively.
