Study Task 1 - Why Am I Here - What do I want to Learn?

  • identify and explain 5 reasons why you chose to study on this programme:
- The courses reputation, one of the best art colleges in the country with a high amount of graduates finishing the course and going straight into the industry. This is what drew me to the college as i realised if i put in the hard work and pursue my goals i can achieve anything i want with the help of the course and how the industry is connected to the college.

- The location of of the college leeds, This location of the college was great for me as it is only an hour away from my home, this was great for me meaning that i could move on to the independent lifestyle and fend for myself but i could still easily go home.

- Great Facilities: When coming to view the college it was a great opportunity for me to view the colleges facilities i was overwhelmed by what the college had to offer. After completing my first year i have still not used  all of the facilities on offer but i will capitalise on these opportunities during level 5

- Visiting Professionals and the college being involved in the industry: I decided that as the college is involved with professionals and the programme is taught by professionals. The programme would obviously get the best out of my abilities. Also as the programme is ran by professionals there is a no messing about attitude that ensures that the best is achieved by all students.

- The College is know for winning competition briefs within the design industry, i decided that i wanted to get my name out there it would be a great opportunity to do this. This year i aim to enter these competitions and to hopefully get somthing out of them.

  • Identify and explain 5 things that you want to learn during your time on the programme:
- The Business side to being a designer: I feel that by doing this i will feel much more comfortable when moving onto Level 6 as i will then have the awareness of the business side of being a designer. This will not only encourage me but i feel it will enhance my design knowledge massively.

- Branding and Working with clients: Branding is something i cannot wait to experiment with, Corporate graphic design is my main area of interest, i would love to work with clients within the industry with a team of designers. Branding is something that i will be experimenting with throughout this year.

- Professional presentation skills: Presentation skills is something that i will be working on over the next 9 months, My presentation skills are not that bad at the moment but i feel that by getting over nerves i would be much more effective when it comes to presenting my work. I feel that this is something that will come in time and wont take long to get over.

- Exploration within Web design: Web design is something i have never really looked at before, however i feel it will be highly beneficial for me as the progression to a digital world is growing, this is one of the main aspects that i aim to expand on and get a real grasp and develop my skills throughout the year.

- Contacting industries and design agencies: By doing this it will not only allow me to get my name into the industry but this will also help with the progress of my design practice as any feedback from professionals in the industry will be highly beneficial to me.
  • Identify and explain 5 skills that you think are your strengths:
- Type and Grid: From feedback i have received from peers i feel that one of my main strengths is development from layout and design sheets into digital development I feel that this allows me to experiment with the a variety of layouts finding the most effective design.

- Editorial design: I feel that one of my main strengths is editorial and publication design, I feel that this is something i exell with however i don't want to make this a recurring theme i want to make sure my designs are varied at all times.

- Communication skills: I feel that since joining the course i have developed massively with my communication skills, it was something that was brought up to me at the beginning i have worked on this throughout the year and i feel that i now focus on this rather than the aesthetics of the design, communication is the key.

- No reoccurring style - I feel that one of the main strengths i have is not sticking to a reoccurring style i feel that this not only allows me to experiment with many different styles of design. But it makes me an adaptable to any client or brief.

- Enjoy working colabartley: I really enjoy working with a group i feel this allows me to share ideas easily and really combine ideas with a group of peers, I feel this not only prepares me for working in the industry but also allows you to evaluate my own work and my peers around me. Im very motivsted and allways contribute my all to the group.

- Highly motivated and hardworking: My main strength is my drive and motivation i am always hardworking and always put 100% effort into everything i do i feel that this is show by the progression of my designs from the begging of the programme.

  • Identify and explain 5 things that you want to improve:
- Problem solving skills: This is something that has been brought up to me over the duration of level 4, I aim to improve this by making sure that i do not rush into the design process straight away i must make sure that i have a very strong design strategy before jumping into it.

- Project management: Towards the end of level 4 my project management skills improved ridiculously and i was able to not only maintain a healthy social life but also make sure i achieved the most out of my ability, I aim to carry as i am i know that the work load is going to step up but i feel that i will be able to manage my projects efficiently ensuring tha ti complete each brief to the highest of standards.

- Presentation skills: This is one of the main points i want to improve i feel this will be easy enough to do as it is something i will be getting used to as we present our work regularly, When working colab i have decided to not hide away during the presentation but to get involved i feel this will be the best way to progress with my presentation skils

- Web design: Web design is something i have never really experimented with as the world is pushing towards digital now i feel that this is something i really want to capitalise on just to give myself a new area and interest within design i feel that this will become one of my main areas of interest and will be something i will constantly develop.

- Explore experimentation with type and grid: I already experiment with this a lot and it has been very beneficial to me, i think it will benefit me again i feel if i carry this on throughout level 5 hopefully allowing me to carry on developing my skills with type and grid.

  • Identify and explain 5 ways that you will evaluate your progress:
-  Using peer critiques to my advantage and organising them myself: I feel that this will allow my peers to give me feedback and advice on my work and also allows me to get praise for what im doing well, this is great for motivation and also allows you capitalise on what needs improving.

- Self assessment of my work when looking through my blog: I feel that this is very useful for me with the constant analysis of my work however this is only my point of view and this could be bias towards my design, getting a point of view from a group of peers lets me know if my work is communicating the intended message.

- Ongoing Evaluation of my on and others work: Evaluating other peoples work not only helps my peers but also helps me in the fact i can apply what i have found in my peers, to my own work.

- Tutorials and group critiques: This allows a group of designer to dissect and critique my work this allows me to get some real effective feed back on my work letting me know what i am doing well and most of all what i must improve in my design. This will increase the quality of my design.

- End of brief Evaluations: This is one of the most effective methods of evaluation in my opinion i feel it allows mw to look at the whole design process, showing m,e what i must improve and look into further to allow me to create the most effective design.

  • Identify 5 questions that you want to find the answer to:
- How do i get my name into the industry?

- How prepared will i be after LCA?

- How do i organise myself a job after LCA?

- How can i find and secure placements abroad?

  • Identify and explain 5 things that inspire you:
- The drive to work and live in Australia: The place i want to be more than anything, also the the creative industry is great in australia - i will be there.

- Great Branding and Identity - simple ideas that make you think why didn't i think of that, i love seeing company branding ideas that use clever representations, i feel that this is something i will excel at and im really looking forward to experimentation.

- Of course the money - working towards earning a great pay packet i know that i am not in this for the money but it will be a huge motivation and will give me the motivation to work harder and harder to get where i want to be.

- Working colab as a team in the industry and seeing my work and effort out there.

- Peers work: Seeing this gives me motivation to push my work further and further.
